Missing and damaged teeth can cause a host of problems. Chewing may become difficult, and speech can easily be disrupted. Existing teeth can begin to drift out of position and could negatively impact your bite alignment and jaw joint function.
If you’re missing one or more teeth, our doctors may recommend crown and bridgework. You have options, and we will explain each one in detail to help you make the right decision to improve your smile.
A crown is typically used to restore a single tooth that has been damaged due to decay or injury. It simply slips over the top of the tooth to restore both its lost structure and appearance, and it is sometimes referred to as a “cap.” Crowns can be made of a variety of materials including metal, porcelain fused to metal, or all-porcelain. Each material is ideally suited to particular teeth, and your doctor can explain them all before you get one.
A bridge, on the other hand, can be used to restore a row of missing teeth. It works by attaching a prosthetic (or “pontic”) tooth to crowns on either side of the missing teeth. A bridge can be either fixed or removable.
In either case, both restorations usually take about 2 visits to be completed and are excellent at restoring a smile’s look and function. With consistent oral hygiene at home and routine checkups with us, these restorations can easily last for 10 years.
